To operationalize the announcement of the price reduction of refined oils, the government is organizing dedicated markets across the country.
Affordable refined oil on the national triangle. In order to effectively implement the recent measure to reduce the price of refined oil packaged in 25 and 20-liter cans, the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, through a statement, informed consumers that he is organizing, starting from April 3, 2024, a special operation across the national territory called “The Refined Oil Fair in Cans”.
According to the statement, the markets concerned in the cities of Douala and Yaoundé are: Boulevard du 20 mai, Carrefour MEEC; Esplanade of the former Sub-Prefecture of Yaoundé 4 (Kondengui) for Yaoundé. And, Esplanade of the Regional Delegation of Trade of Littoral; Relais Plus Sign (New-Deïdo); SODISPRAL Sign (Douala 2nd); ETS Famille HR Trading (Non-glacé Market); World Distribution Sign (Douala 4th) for Douala.
As for the prices, the 25-liter can will cost 27,500 CFA francs, equivalent to 1,100 CFA francs/liter; and the 20-liter can will be sold for 22,000 CFA francs, equivalent to 1,100 CFA francs/liter.
However, consumers continue to complain because the prices in the market have not changed since March 27 as instructed by the Minister of Trade. “For now, nothing has changed in the stores, not a liter, nor twenty liters. Merchants say they bought the stock at a high price and cannot align with this new price without selling the current stock.”
By organizing these dedicated markets and implementing price reductions, the government aims to make refined oils more accessible to consumers and ensure that the benefits of reduced prices are passed on to them effectively. The Minister of Trade’s efforts to regulate prices and ensure compliance with the announced reductions show a commitment to consumer welfare and fair market practices. It is important for both consumers and merchants to work together to ensure that the benefits of these measures are fully realized.
