A gendarme and four civilians were killed on March 31, 2024, the day of the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ for Christians. The tragedy took place in the locality of Kai-Kai, Mayo-Danay department, Far North region. The deaths were the result of a confrontation between the elements of the National Gendarmerie and the population. According to administrative authorities, several injuries were also recorded. “We had a tumultuous morning on the side of Kai-Kai between the gendarmes who were on patrol and the population, the assailants who pursued them. In the end, this incident resulted in five deaths including a gendarme. Five other gendarmes were injured,” said the prefect of Mayo-Danay.
Lazare Ndongo Ndongo stated on national radio that he “reminded the population that they must respect institutions, respect the people who speak on behalf of the institutions. We called for calm. We asked traditional leaders to call for calm, to ensure that calm is restored.” According to the prefect, the stabilized injured were taken care of at the Kaï-Kaï district medical center. The authority instructed to refer severe cases to the regional hospital annex in Yagoua. After this incident and the awareness campaign, the prefect also assures that calm has returned to his administrative unit and that the population is going about their daily activities.
