Five Cameroonian nationals who were kidnapped by a Chadian armed group have been rescued and returned to Cameroonian authorities in Ndjamena. This successful operation was led by the Chadian Minister of Public Security, General Mahamat Charfadine Margui.

The handover of the hostages took place on March 29 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with representatives from both countries present. Dignitaries from Chad and Cameroon were in attendance, including the Secretary-General of Chad’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Public Security, and the First Counsellor of the Cameroon Embassy in Chad.

The hostages were freed at the Chad-Cameroon border, where they had been held captive by armed groups launching attacks along the border. General Mahamat Charfadine Margui conducted the operation to secure their release as part of efforts to combat transnational crime and ensure the safety of foreign nationals within Chad.

The Secretary General of Chad’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised the determination of the defense and security forces in securing the release and ending the activities of the kidnappers in the region. The representative of Cameroon’s diplomatic mission to Chad also appreciated the Chadian Government’s efforts to maintain security along the troubled border.

Chad and Cameroon share a border of over 1,100 kilometers, where the civilian population faces constant threats from Boko Haram militants and armed gangs. This area is known for kidnappings, arms trafficking, and conflicts between farmers and herders.

Last October, Defense Ministers from both countries met in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, to develop strategies to combat cross-border attacks and crime. The militaries of Cameroon and Chad were instructed to jointly monitor and respond to attacks by Boko Haram extremists and armed groups along the border.

This successful rescue and collaboration between Chad and Cameroon demonstrate the commitment of both countries to improving security along their shared border. Efforts to combat transnational crime and protect the civilian population from violence are ongoing in the region.
