In an interview with The Guardian, Samuel Eto’o’s lawyer, Antoine Vey, refuted allegations that the former footballer was involved in a conversation about corruption.
Vey stated that the audio in question, in which Eto’o is speaking to a club president, does not in any way prove any involvement in illegal activities. He emphasized that the purpose of this investigation seems to be to tarnish Eto’o’s reputation, without any real basis. The lawyer expressed doubts about the timeline and motivation of this investigation, suggesting that it could be used to spread fake news.
“Mr. Eto’o does not acknowledge having taken part in a conversation in which he obviously discusses corruption. If you listen to the audio, he is trying to reassure the club president about certain issues he is facing; he says the problem will be resolved, but he does not say it was done through illegal means or anything like that. It’s not clear what the purpose of the audio really is. It is not very relevant to the procedure and is just part of a campaign to harm Eto’o’s reputation. We believe that this investigation is unfounded and was only opened to create negative publicity about Mr. Eto’o.”
“We do not accept the way they are acting. If you look at the timeline, we do not understand why the hearing is taking place now and why it did not happen in August. We can also see that people are using these kinds of procedural absurdities to create fake news about him,” said the Fecafoot president’s lawyer.
This statement comes as the CAF’s investigation into the Fecafoot president raises questions about its implications and purpose. The president was expected to appear yesterday, April 17, to answer the charges against him and the president of Victoria United.
