Public authorities are asking butchers to reduce the price of a kilogram of beef by 200 FCFA. This requirement comes just a few days before the month of Ramadan and while Lent has already begun.
The kilogram of meat must decrease by 200 FCFA, as emerged from the meeting presided over last Thursday in Maroua by Midjiyawa Bakari, governor of the Far North region. Around him, stakeholders in the sector and officials from regional delegations of the relevant ministries such as Minepia and Mincommerce.
The three main factors behind this initiative are the increase in animal production in the region, the depreciation of the Nigerian Naira which has reached a historically low rate in recent weeks, at 1000 FCFA for 2640 Naira.
“We will ask Customs to completely reduce customs duties, and even municipal taxes, to allow you to alleviate the suffering of households. You must support the state in difficult times if you want the state to also come to your aid by reducing certain taxes,” said Modjiyawa Bakary, governor of the Far North.
In addition, the security concerns in some neighboring countries have made Cameroon the most favorable market at the moment. This significant flow of animal products has automatically led to a decrease in the price of livestock in the market to the advantage of butchers.
Therefore, taking advantage of this situation, the governor of the Far North region believes that this benefit should also be felt in the household’s budget.
Starting from Friday, March 8, 2024, a kilogram of boneless beef that used to cost between 2000 FCFA and 2200 FCFA will now be priced between 1800 FCFA and 2000 FCFA, while a kilogram of beef with bones that used to cost between 1800 FCFA and 2000 FCFA will be sold between 1600 FCFA and 2000 FCFA.
