In a statement released last night, the Minister of Communication, without mentioning the name of the first lady, condemns those who confuse freedom of expression with “excess and all kinds of excess, including invective, insult, defamation, gossip, indecency, lack of respect for others, as well as other personal attacks, incitement to sedition, and even hostility towards the country.”
The government is mobilizing to show support to Chantal Biya. Pressured on social media by Marlene Emvoutou, the first lady has just received the government’s support. In his statement published on February 8th, Rene Emmanuel Sadi writes: “the head of state has, therefore, allowed his compatriots to express themselves freely, to express their views on all issues of common interest, thus demonstrating their legitimate right to freedom of expression, in a context of liberalization of social life, a liberalization desired and assumed in an irreversible manner.”
However, this option, which has been hailed by all, both nationally and internationally, cannot be understood as the right left to everyone to indulge in excess and all kinds of excess, including invective, insult, defamation, gossip, indecency, lack of respect for others, as well as other personal attacks, incitement to sedition, and even hostility against the country.
This statement follows a series of statements by Marlene Emvoutou, a businesswoman and former president of the Football League of Dja Elobo. In her statements, she, who claims to be the biological daughter of Professor Gervais Mendo Ze, exposed the role played by Chantal Biya in maintaining the power of the now disabled Paul Biya. According to her, it is Chantal Biya who holds the reins of power and shows Cameroonians that her husband has become impotent. “But we want to tell Cameroonians that Chantal Biya is not capable of leading this country,” she declared.
Before this statement, several “influencers,” as well as artists, had already been mobilized to respond to Marlene Emvoutou. The civil cabinet even reportedly released large sums of money in order to silence the native of Dja and Lobo. But in vain, as she continues to make her statements.
