The first secretary of the People United for Social Renewal, an opposition party, Serge Espoir Matomba, believes that this approach could put an end to the frequent power outages, exorbitant costs, or poor quality of service. Here is the full statement of the party released on March 6, 2024.
“The People United for Social Renewal (PURS) demands the nationalization of ENEO, the electricity distribution company in Cameroon. As a political movement committed to social justice and equal opportunities for all Cameroonian citizens, PURS makes an urgent appeal for the nationalization of this company.
For several years, and particularly in recent times, Cameroonians have been facing the challenge of frequent power outages, exorbitant tariffs, and poor quality distribution service. It is time for the Government to take responsibility and act in favor of the people by nationalizing this strategic company.
The nationalization of ENEO would ensure the sovereignty of strategic electricity distribution, equitable access for all citizens to this energy, transparent and efficient management of the country’s resources, and an end to consumer fraud by private interests.
PURS calls on the Cameroonian Government to take urgent measures to nationalize the electricity distribution and end harmful practices that undermine the well-being and economic development of the country. It also urges all active forces to unite for this purpose by demanding the nationalization of electricity distribution for a fairer quality service for all Cameroonians.”
