A heavily intoxicated soldier drove an army pickup into several parked private cars in Mbankolo, Yaoundé this morning, sparking anger from the owners and the local population.
The situation escalated into a fight when the soldier’s colleagues arrived at the scene and threatened the angry crowd with rifles.
Witnesses reported that a visibly drunk soldier in civilian clothing was driving a white army pickup with the registration number 31791575 when he lost control and crashed into a taxi parked by the roadside around 4am. The impact also damaged several other parked vehicles.
When the owners of the vehicles arrived, the soldier pulled out his weapon and called for backup from his colleagues, who arrived armed and forcibly towed the damaged army vehicle without showing any remorse for their actions.
This incident raised concerns about the misconduct of some military officers in Cameroon, who use their authority to mistreat ordinary citizens.
