The town of Abong Mbang, in the Eastern region of Cameroon, has been in mourning since last Thursday. A well-known businessman, Mr. Guy Chinois, was found hanged at his home.

The body of Mr. Chinois, the owner of the hardware store “La Racine,” was discovered in his neighborhood of L’Aurore. According to witnesses, the house was in order and a rope was hanging from the ceiling, suggesting suicide.

However, the exact circumstances of the death remain unclear. Law enforcement, who arrived at the scene after the alert, conducted an investigation without making any comments. Faced with speculations and rumors circulating in the town, the authorities announced the opening of an investigation to determine whether it was a suicide or a disguised murder.

The death of Mr. Chinois recalls a similar tragedy that occurred in September 2022 in Buea, where a businessman, Mr. Nkongho, had committed suicide by hanging himself from a mango tree. He too was known to be going through a difficult period.

Suicide is a public health problem that is often overlooked. In Cameroon, as in many countries, reliable statistics are lacking and the topic remains taboo. It is important to raise awareness about this scourge and to put in place support structures for people in distress.

It is worth noting that the investigation opened by the authorities will determine the exact circumstances of Mr. Chinois’ death and shed light on this tragedy in Abong Mbang.

– Emergency number for suicide in Cameroon: 116
– Telephone helpline “Psychological Listening”: 8000 1234
