Marc Brys, the new coach of the Cameroon national team, the Indomitable Lions, officially took office on April 8, 2024. The ceremony, which was held at the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, was attended by various dignitaries, although Samuel Eto’o was not present. The President of the Football Federation, FECAFOOT, had a seat reserved for him at the event.
During the gathering, the sports minister acknowledged Eto’o’s absence, as he was attending his father’s funeral. The minister offered condolences, saying, “We want to acknowledge the absence of Eto’o, who is busy with his father’s funeral, David Eto’o, and may his soul rest in peace.” However, there were reports that Eto’o had declined the minister’s invitation due to alleged government interference in football matters.
Marc Brys faces a challenging start to his tenure as he is tasked with restoring the Cameroon national team’s lost glory and building a relationship with Samuel Eto’o. Brys, the newly appointed head coach, signed a two-and-a-half-year contract extension.
Brys began his coaching career at Berchem Sport in Belgium before moving on to manage Germinal Beerschot, Royal Mouscron-Péruwelz, FC Eindhoven, Den Bosch, KV Mechelen, Al-Faisaly FC in Saudi Arabia, and Club Al-Raed. After being dismissed from OH Leuven in October 2023, Brys retired briefly before accepting the offer to coach Cameroon.
As a coach, Brys has managed a total of 560 matches with 214 wins, 150 draws, and 196 losses, boasting a win percentage of 38.21%. His coaching records with various clubs showcase his capabilities, including securing championships and Cup titles.
The ceremony marking Brys’ assumption of office as the coach of the Indomitable Lions was a significant event, highlighting the challenges and expectations that come with the role. As Brys embarks on this new journey, he will bring his wealth of experience and expertise to lead the national team towards success.
