Cameroon’s Ministry of Territorial Administration, in collaboration with various partners, unveiled the 2024 humanitarian aid plan in Yaoundé on April 16, 2024. This plan is designed to assist 3.4 million vulnerable individuals throughout the country. The goal is to provide life-saving aid and protection to those affected by crises such as violence, natural disasters, climate shocks, and disease outbreaks. The plan calls for a total of US$ 371.4 million (approximately FCFA 228 billion) in funding, which represents a decrease from the previous year’s allocation of 407.3 million US dollars.

The development of the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan involved input from multiple sectors to address the most critical humanitarian needs in the country. Interventions will focus on areas like education, food security, health, nutrition, protection, shelter, non-food items, and water and sanitation. The United Nations reports that 77 percent of the population in need of humanitarian assistance in Cameroon are women and children, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to alleviate their suffering.

Siaka Coulibaly, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Cameroon, emphasized the need for renewed commitment from the humanitarian community and donors to address critical needs. He also stressed the importance of exploring innovative and sustainable solutions to address displacement effects in collaboration with national authorities, development actors, and international financial institutions.

Cameroon faces ongoing challenges, including armed conflicts in the Far North Region and the Anglophone Regions, the influx of Central African refugees, disease outbreaks, and climate shocks. Natural and man-made disasters like floods, landslides, and fire outbreaks also continue to impact the population. The 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan specifically targets urgent needs arising from the Lake Chad basin conflict, crises in the North-West and South-West regions, refugee influx, disease outbreaks, and climate shocks.

Despite some positive developments in certain regions, the humanitarian situation in Cameroon remains dire, with nearly one million internally displaced people and approximately half a million refugees and asylum seekers in the country. It is estimated that 2.5 million people will face acute food insecurity in 2024. The launch of the 2024 Humanitarian Aid Plan signifies a unified effort to address these challenges and provide essential support to the most vulnerable populations in Cameroon.
