Cameroon has recently been ranked as the 6th worst-governed country in Africa, according to a new report by World Economics, a research organization based in the UK.
The ranking was based on several key factors including levels of corruption, press freedom, rule of law, and political rights. Libya was ranked as the worst-governed country in Africa, followed by DR Congo and Chad.
World Economics uses an index that ranges from 0 to 100 to determine the level of governance in a country. A score of 0 indicates poor governance while a score of 100 represents the highest level of governance. Similarly, corruption perception is rated on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 indicating a high level of corruption and 100 indicating low corruption. Rule of law, press freedom, and political rights are also rated on the same scale.
Among the ten worst-governed countries in Africa, Cameroon received a score of 27.2. This places Cameroon in the lower tier of governance within the continent.
It should be noted that the index used by World Economics gives equal weight to all four criteria, indicating that each factor is considered equally important in determining a country’s level of governance.
Overall, the report highlights the challenges facing Cameroon in terms of governance and calls for further efforts to improve the country’s performance in key areas such as corruption, press freedom, rule of law, and political rights.
