Some Cameroonian lawmakers at the National Assembly strongly condemned the bomb attack carried out by Ambazonia separatists targeting schoolchildren in Nkambe. They also expressed their concerns about corruption within the country’s institutions.
During the opening of the March parliamentary session in Yaounde, Hon. Koa Mengue Laurentine, the oldest member of the Assembly, described the Nkambe attack as a “despicable crime.”
The Nkambe bomb attack refers to an incident that occurred on February 11th, resulting in the tragic death of one person and leaving many others, including children, injured in an explosion in the volatile English-speaking Northwest region of Cameroon.
The explosion took place during the Youth Day celebration in Nkambe, adding to the series of separatist attacks that have taken place recently, resulting in the loss of numerous civilian lives.
The separatist conflict first emerged in 2016 when Anglophone Cameroonians protested against discrimination by the Francophone majority. The United Nations reported that the ongoing unrest has led to the deaths of over 6,000 people and has deprived approximately 600,000 children of education. However, Cameroon lawmakers have not officially addressed the crisis or discussed ways to resolve it.
During the session, Hon. Laurentine also criticized the widespread corruption in the country, stating that it is “eating away at the country’s institutions.” She also highlighted the issue of garbage accumulation in the nation’s cities, which is affecting the vulnerable population.
The House’s bureau was elected during the session, with longtime speaker Cavaye Yegui Djibril expected to retain his leadership position.
The opening session was attended by Prime Minister and Head of Government, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, members of the Judiciary and Diplomatic Corps, and other dignitaries. The Senate is scheduled to hold its own session and leadership elections after the Lower House concludes its business.
