Two government Ministers from Cameroon visited victims and areas affected by heavy rains that resulted in the death of a Master’s student and caused damage to several buildings and vehicles on March 8th.

On Monday morning, the Minister of Secondary Education, Prof. Nalova Lyonga, and the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, conveyed the condolences of the Head of State to the family of Beyala Sylvain, the student who lost his life in the tragic event. They also provided comfort and reassurance to numerous individuals whose homes were impacted by the torrential rains.

During their visit, the Ministers conducted an inspection of houses, offices, and schools that suffered significant damage as a result of the heavy rainfall. According to a statement from MINAT, Beyala Sylvain passed away at home after being struck by falling furniture during the intense storm on March 8th.

Structures that were damaged in the disaster included GBHS Etoug Ebe, GBPHS Yaounde, Lycée General LeClerc, and the Efulan Divisional Officer’s office, among others. At GBHS Etoub Ebe, the storm caused extensive damage to four buildings, resulting in 23 classrooms being affected, with 10 of them rendered inoperable as of Monday, impacting the education of over 2,000 students.

A joint statement from the two Ministries indicated that the interministerial delegation offered support to the school Principals and students affected by the disaster, and provided recommendations for the reconstruction of damaged buildings and the accommodation of the learners. Minister Atanga Nji of MINAT also assured those whose homes were destroyed that they will be restored in accordance with the government’s disaster management policies.

During the visit, the Ministers were accompanied by the Governor of the Center Region, Naseri Paul Bea, and various high-ranking officials from both Ministries. The government is committed to providing assistance and support to those affected by the recent natural disaster.
