Some fashion designers from various African countries are gathering in Buea, Southwest Cameroon, to showcase their work and culture through design. This gathering is part of the African Heritage Fashion Week and Award program, organized by Nuvi Gana, the founder of Nuvi Creative, a well-known fashion house in Cameroon.
The event is being held at Pinorich Villa near Buea Central Market, providing a platform for these designers to celebrate their work, connect with each other, and pass on their knowledge to the younger generation. Nuvi Gana aims to bring together fashion actors from across Africa to not only promote local designers, models, and fashion artists but also to address key challenges and barriers in the African fashion, acting, music, and entertainment industries.
The 2024 African Heritage Fashion Week and Award emphasizes African multiculturalism as a venue for meeting, sharing experiences, and breaking down barriers that have hindered the success of designers, models, artists, bead makers, and fashion buyers in Africa. Nuvi Gana highlighted the importance of this event in acknowledging the creativity and expertise of fashion actors and in advocating for better support from the Cameroonian government for young entrepreneurs in the clothing and haute couture industries.
The event features activities such as model master classes, fashion exhibitions, seminars, and awards, spanning over a four-day period. One day is specifically dedicated to celebrating cultural heritage, including a special night called “Toghu Sanja Night” to showcase traditional outfits. Other nights are designated for African countries to display their cultural designs and styles.
Nuvi Gana expressed his commitment to giving back to the industry by sharing the knowledge he has gained over his 20 years of experience. He believes in encouraging initiatives for youth training and job creation within the fashion industry.
Among the designers participating in the event is Matene Annie Chancelle, the founder of Annie’s EmpowerWear, known for her special Toghu designs showcased in the previous edition of the African Heritage Fashion Week and Award. The event aims to support and promote African designers and cultural diversity, becoming a permanent fixture in the fashion scene of Buea and Cameroon as a whole.
Overall, the African Heritage Fashion Week and Award serves as a valuable platform for African fashion actors to showcase their creativity, address industry challenges, and foster collaboration and growth within the local fashion community.
