Motorbike taxi drivers without a license or national identity card, a call for order.

It is a refresher session for moto-taxi drivers organized at the deliberation hall of the Ngaoundéré municipality by the Vina departmental delegation of transport. An initiative led by the Vina municipality in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport following the multiple accidents recorded on the public road.

“To reduce these risks that sometimes result in loss of human lives, it has become important and necessary to put these young moto-taxi drivers in order,” it is explained.

According to the latest statistics, 70% of traffic accidents are caused by human errors, with victims mostly consisting of students, elderly people, and students. “It is even more serious to note that it is difficult to find, out of 100 moto-taxi drivers, even 10 who have their driver’s license.”

Among the 286 moto-taxi drivers in the municipality, 95% are involved in traffic accidents, causing huge damage here and there.

“It seems that these drivers do not master either driving or the highway code,” it is added.

It should be noted that most young people engage in drug use without caring about the people they transport on their vehicle.

Another even more dangerous phenomenon is the fact that 50% of moto-taxi drivers do not have a national identity card (ID).

To remedy these shortcomings, road safety experts (Police) and the Cameroonian Red Cross provided training to participants on first aid, first aid gestures, traffic, the highway code, among others.

Mohamadou Bassirou, mayor of the Ngaoundéré III municipality, has committed to continuing to raise awareness activities for the population, especially for moto-taxi drivers.

“We have promised to issue 100 driver’s licenses and IDs to this category of people working in moto-taxi activities,” states the mayor of the Ngaoundéré III municipality.

Peer educators have also been trained to support the municipality in this initiative.

In the coming days, they will go to communities to raise awareness among road users to avoid these cases of fatal accidents in the city of Ngaoundéré.
