The most ambitious disadvantaged woman in Buea will receive a cash prize of FCFA 1 million as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations on March 8th.

The donation will be provided by Boissons du Cameroun, formerly known as Brasseries du Cameroun, with the intention of promoting hard work among women and supporting those in need.

The announcement was made during the launch of the 39th edition of International Women’s Day in Buea by Lucia Ediage Sona, the Southwest Regional Delegation of Women Empowerment and the Family, on Friday, March 1st.

The event featured a march from OIC Market to Buea Independence Square, where women carried signs advocating for gender equality and other important causes.

At Bongo Square, where the women gathered, prayers were offered for the spiritual empowerment of women, peace and prosperity in the region, wisdom for leadership, and investment in women. Female religious leaders such as Rev. Sobe Florence, Pastor Nostra, and Evangelist Regina Molua led the prayers.

As part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, planned activities include empowerment sessions at the Governor’s office and Buea Chief’s palace, free screenings for HIV, cancer, and suicide rates, and a football match.

A noteworthy event will be the entrepreneurial competition on Tuesday, March 6th, at the Women Empowerment Centre in Buea. Underprivileged women will showcase their entrepreneurial skills, and the winner will receive a significant prize of FCFA 1 million on March 8th.

This year’s International Women’s Day is themed “Investment in Women: Accelerating Progress,” emphasizing the commitment to promoting the economic empowerment of women and advancing their progress in various areas.

The women competing for the Biosson Du Cameroun prize are among the many who have been displaced to Buea due to the Anglophone Crisis. This crisis has led to the displacement of over a million people, with many seeking refuge in urban areas like Buea, which has remained relatively peaceful.
