Cameroon’s first Anglo-Saxon university, the University of Buea (UB), and the British High Commission in Yaoundé have been exploring ways to enhance collaboration. The Second Secretary of Political Affairs at the British High Commission, Natasha Hosford, visited UB on February 29 to discuss potential areas of cooperation between the two parties.
During the meeting, Natasha Hosford exchanged information with UB officials on best practices from UK universities. The aim of the meeting, which was attended by the University’s Registrar Eneke Agbor Bechem and other officials, was to explore opportunities for graduates of the University of Buea to pursue further education at UK universities.
Discussions centered around academic support, including various funds established by the British Government to compensate for those lost after the UK’s departure from the EU. The meeting also focused on the future of Cameroon and the importance of collaboration between policymakers and the community.
Natasha Hosford stressed that one of the new British High Commission’s key priorities is elections and how the British Government is supporting initiatives in the South West Region. During her visit to Douala, Limbe, and Buea, she aimed to gain a better understanding of the realities and challenges faced by individuals in these towns.
The visit to the University of Buea was particularly significant as it provided insights into opportunities for harnessing youth power and academic research in broader initiatives. Following discussions with students, Natasha Hosford identified key areas of opportunity for greater collaboration, such as the environment and biodiversity.
She mentioned a forthcoming program focusing on the Congo Basin Forest and highlighted the potential for collaboration in Cameroon. The British Government has a longstanding history of collaboration with Cameroon in the field of education, especially in the English-speaking regions.
Natasha Hosford assured that there are ample opportunities for collaboration between UK institutions, businesses investing internationally, and academic institutions like the University of Buea. These collaborations could involve support with physical resources, infrastructural development, and the exchange of capabilities and skills.
