Kenyan athlete Charles Kipsang Kipkorir tragically passed away after participating in the 29th edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, where he finished in 16th place in the Senior Men category.

The 32-year-old collapsed shortly after crossing the finish line at the Molyko Stadium, and despite efforts by the medical team to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the Buea Regional Hospital.

Authorities had already awarded prizes and gifts to the winners before Kipkorir’s death was confirmed. South West Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai, stated that the cause of death is still unknown, although there are reports suggesting it may have been due to a heart attack.

The Governor mentioned that Kipkorir appeared to be in good health after the race when he spoke with the president of the federation, Mr. Motombi. Kipkorir had been leading the race before suddenly stopping and eventually finishing in 16th place.

He was the first athlete to reach the summit of Mount Cameroon and was praised by the media for his performance during the descent. However, he mysteriously disappeared a few kilometers from the finish line, allowing Cameroonian-born Elvis Nsabinla to emerge as the champion.

This was Kipkorir’s fourth time participating in the Race of Hope, where 19 Kenyan athletes competed. His death comes just two weeks after another well-known Kenyan athlete, Kelvin Kiptum, also tragically passed away in a road accident.

The President of Kenya had recently attended Kiptum’s funeral in northwestern Kenya, highlighting the tragic losses that the country’s athletic community has experienced in a short period.

Kipkorir’s passing has left a void in the world of athletics, and his sudden death has shocked many. Despite his untimely demise, his legacy as an accomplished athlete will be remembered and celebrated by all those who knew him.
