A video has surfaced online featuring Sama Thomas Achoa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Ambazonia separatist group Batubu Kwifor based in Mankon, North West Cameroon. In the video, Achoa is seen encouraging Ambazonia fighters to target pregnant women as a means to garner international attention to the ongoing conflict.
Along with advocating for violence against pregnant women, Achoa also calls for the killing of Francophone civilians living in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon. He believes that targeting these individuals will bring global awareness to the conflict in the North West and South West Regions.
Achoa urges his fighters to ignore any international conventions that may hold them accountable in the future when engaging in combat. He emphasizes the need to eliminate citizens of La Republic and even pregnant women in large numbers to attract international attention. He believes that such actions will lead to a deployment of soldiers rather than diplomats, establishing a buffer zone between French and English Cameroon.
Despite residing in Belgium, A European country with strict regulations on international conflicts, Achoa continues to spread these violent directives. He disregards the prohibition of targeting non-combatants and persistently advocates for violence against civilians.
In addition to promoting violence against civilians, Achoa has also targeted journalists covering the conflict in the North West and South West regions. He has threatened to blacklist the Cameroon News Agency and has similarly threatened MMI to control media reporting on the conflict. The CEOs of MMI and CNA have condemned these threats against media professionals and have affirmed their commitment to documenting atrocities.
The Cameroon Anglophone crisis, which escalated into an armed conflict in 2017, has witnessed both sides committing serious human rights abuses, including the targeting of women and children, burning people alive, extrajudicial killings, rape, and torture.
Although the date of the video is unclear, it has emerged at a time when civilians and journalists are facing increasingly frequent attacks in the ongoing conflict. The United Nations reports a death toll exceeding 6,000, with over a million people internally and externally displaced as the conflict continues to devastate the region.
