In a press release signed on February 22nd, Richard Mfeugwang, the mayor of Douala 5th district, indicates that the neighborhoods of Toko and Logpom are mainly affected.
Bedbugs are present in Douala. In a statement signed on February 22nd, Richard Mfeugwang, the mayor of Douala 5th district, draws the attention of the population. “The mayor of the municipality of Douala 5th district informs his kind population that two focal points of bedbug infestations have been discovered in the municipality under his responsibility, specifically in the localities of Toko and Logpom,” writes the municipal official.
The mayor recommends: “extreme vigilance regarding clothes and items from flea markets, strict compliance with hygiene rules including regular cleanliness of the house and surroundings, chemical or thermal disinfection of infested and suspicious places, thorough cleaning of shoes outside the homes”.
This new wave comes a few weeks after the appearance of some bedbug infestations in several neighborhoods in Yaoundé. On that occasion, the Minister of Public Health also made some recommendations: he stated that it is necessary to “carefully clean furniture recovered from the street or bought at flea markets before bringing them into the house. Avoid cluttering spaces to reduce the number of places where bedbugs can hide. Do not place bags on the floor or on the bed, and even less under the bed: store them on a luggage rack inspected beforehand and keep them closed when not in use, do not place clothes on the bed or in the wardrobes without examining them thoroughly, wash clothes with boiling water after purchase. Upon returning from a trip, make sure there are no bedbugs in the luggage, take out clothes and examine personal belongings, wash clothes and examine fabric items with hot water (if possible at 60°), whether they have been worn or not”.
It is worth mentioning that bedbugs, which are small oval-shaped insects, very flat, wingless and brown in color turning reddish after a blood meal, have consequences such as allergic reactions during bites, blood spoliation in case of massive infestation, and psychological effects.
