Bamenda Main Market is currently in the process of being rebuilt with the hopes of transforming it into a modern complex, signaling a promising future for the city. The reconstruction of the historic Bamenda Main Market officially began today, marking a significant milestone for the city’s bustling economic hub. The project, awarded to construction firm Edge, follows a devastating fire in February that destroyed over 300 shops.

The 6 Billion Central African Francs (CFA) contract reflects Mayor Achobong Tambeng Paul’s commitment to providing a state-of-the-art market. The funding for the project was secured through a loan from the FEICOM communal development pool, which was approved by the members of the Bamenda City Council.

“This project is more than just a reconstruction,” Mayor Achobong stated. “We envision a two-story complex with improved accessibility from all sides, a dedicated water borehole, and a modern electrical system.”

Initial plans suggested a complete demolition of the current structure to make way for a more contemporary marketplace. This ambitious vision also includes provisions for financial and insurance institutions.

The fire in February highlighted the urgent need for improvements, as it was exacerbated by the interconnected aluminum roofing and cramped layout of the market. The design of the new market prioritizes safety and functionality, addressing these issues directly.

“The decision of the council to demolish and rebuild is a bold one,” remarked Mezam Senior Divisional Officer Simon Emile Mooh, who is overseeing the commission responsible for compensating traders affected by the fire.

This project is happening concurrently with the construction of a new nearby stadium at Bamenda Parcours Vita. With a budget of less than 1 Billion Central African Francs (CFA), this initiative aims to meet the growing demand for modern recreational facilities in the city.

Amidst the ongoing reconstruction of the market and the upcoming construction of the stadium, Bamenda is on the verge of a remarkable transformation. The swift response of the city council brings hope to traders and residents alike.
