The victims succumbed to a traffic accident that occurred in the evening of February 29, 2024 in the Far North region.

A transport minibus was involved in a traffic accident 10 km from the city of Maroua, the regional capital of the Far North, at the Yonkalé intersection. The Toyota Hiace vehicle, which departed from Mokolo in the Mayo-Tsanaga department and was heading to Maroua, was carrying passengers, mostly refugees going to replenish supplies at the Minawao camp. The driver lost control of the vehicle due to the bursting of a front tire.

According to the governor of the region, Midjiyawa Bakari, who visited the scene, the toll stands at 12 dead, including eight women and four children. The 22 injured were transported to the regional hospital in Maroua, while the deceased passengers were taken to the hospital’s morgue.

The administrative authority attributes the cause of the accident to technical failures and overload, which may have led to the tire bursting. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact causes of the accident.
