Emmanuel Mariel Djikdent, the prefect of the Mfoundi department, has just sounded the alarm on a possible unrest movement in his command area. In a message circulating on social media and addressed to territorial administrations and specialized services of the Gendarmerie and Police, we can read: “intentions of unrest in various sectors. Leaders wanting to use the pretext of fuel and high cost of living. Possible manipulation to lead young people into the streets and strike by transporters. Therefore, I ask you: First, remain alert; second, report any suspicious gatherings or movements; Third, monitor known sensitive areas; Fourth, ask the men on the ground not to give in to any possible provocation, in addition, Sub-Prefects will not issue any march permits”.
This statement from the administrative authority follows the announcement of the increase in certain oil products made on the 8:00 p.m. news by the government. In its statement, the Secretary General of the Prime Minister’s Services, Séraphin Magloire Fouda, informed that the price of a liter of gasoline is increasing from 730 Fcfa to 840 Fcfa, a 110 Fcfa absolute increase and a 15% relative increase. The price of diesel, on the other hand, is now 828 Fcfa compared to the previous 720 Fcfa, an increase of 108 Fcfa (+13%). The government measure takes effect from February 3rd. The prices of domestic gas and lamp oil remain unchanged at 6500 Fcfa for a 12.5kg bottle and 350 Fcfa for a liter of lamp oil, but gasoline and diesel prices have increased.
As announced in one of our previous articles, we can expect unrest movements after this increase in oil prices, which will lead to an increase in all prices of products and services, especially transportation and consumer goods. Even though civil society actors haven’t officially planned anything yet, we won’t be surprised if transport unions call for a strike and consumer associations plan peaceful marches.
