In a live address to the youth on February 10th, President Paul Biya expressed concern about the phenomenon of emigration in his traditional speech to the youth. “The growing desire of a section of our youth to emigrate to other lands is becoming increasingly alarming. Especially when it becomes an obsession and concerns even those who have successfully integrated social locally,” said Paul Biya in his speech.

He added, “Certainly, our country, like many others in the world, is facing a difficult situation. However, the solution is not always to leave. Leaving, yes, but not at any cost. Furthermore, know that while you aspire to leave, many foreigners are trying to settle in Cameroon, confirming that it is a welcoming land and a country of opportunities.”

According to Cameroonian authorities, the Cameroonian diaspora represents more than 6 million people, mostly highly qualified, few of whom put their knowledge to the benefit of their home country. This makes Cameroon one of the African countries affected by the brain drain phenomenon.

The phenomenon of emigration to Canada has increased in recent times. This is due to the fact that Canada has developed a culture of exemplary hospitality based on respect for differences and inclusion. Its immigration policy values merit and qualifications, giving Cameroonians the feeling that their efforts will be rewarded.

Economically, the Canadian job market offers more opportunities in expanding fields such as mining, technology, and finance. The standard of living is also higher. As a result, teachers, doctors, and nursing staff are fleeing Cameroon in large numbers, to the point where, according to some reports, the state is considering imposing restrictions in response to this talent exodus.
