The incident occurred yesterday in the town of Touboro, a commune in Cameroon located in the Northern region and the Mayo-Rey department.
In Touboro, tension has not yet subsided between the civilian population and the gendarmerie more than 24 hours after. Yesterday, a gendarmerie warrant officer coldly shot 4 civilians over a 500 FCFA matter. Our sources indicate that the civilians had refused to pay 500 FCFA during a road check, and after the altercation, the angered gendarme took out his weapon and coldly shot the 4 men. “I am completely overwhelmed with these people. I don’t know if it’s a curse or what. A gendarmerie warrant officer goes and kills civilians over a 500 FCFA issue,” deplored a gendarme in a voice recording in our possession.
The identities of the gendarme and the victims have not been communicated to us. But the images in our possession are unbearable.
Upon being informed, the population came out in masses and launched a manhunt. Our informants did not tell us the whereabouts of the accused gendarme or whether he was also killed. What we know is that some gendarmes have already paid the price. “All the gendarmes who are on duty, none of them can return home. The civilians have said that wherever they find the gendarmes, they will kill them until further notice. Several gendarmes are already considering moving their families out of Touboro.”
A gendarme, speaking anonymously, indicated that his wife and children will return to Yaoundé for fear of being targeted by the population.
According to several gendarmes, this kind of situation is the result of the financial commitments made by certain gendarmes, which go beyond their means. “You see what is happening. It is very, very serious. We should know that in doing our job, we are there to protect civilians. But there are people who go out only to look for money. Someone just joined the gendarmerie, but he makes contributions of 100,000 FCFA each week. When he goes out, he is there to assault citizens. In addition to the contributions, he alone has 17 girlfriends and pays for houses for some,” lamented another gendarme in a voice recording in our possession.
