The director of the hospital in Messamena in the East of the country has been suspended by the Minister of Public Health for “serious breach of ethics and professional ethics”.

The suspension will last up to 3 months. During this time, the doctor will not receive his salary. This is the outcome of the sanction imposed yesterday against Dr. Serge Assamba Mpom, director of the Messamena District Hospital in the Eastern region.

This sanction against the head of the Messamena hospital follows a dispute between the doctor and the sub-prefect of the same town. On February 1st, in response to a request for explanation from the sub-prefect accusing him of absenteeism a few days earlier, the Director of the Messamena District Hospital launched invectives against the sub-prefect. He also accused the sub-prefect of trying to harm him.

Following this sanction, the president of the National Order of Doctors of Cameroon (ONMC) came to the defense of Dr. Serge Assamba Mpom. According to Dr. Rodolphe Fonkoua, president of the Council of the Order, there was no respect for the contradictory in the disciplinary procedure against Dr. Assamba Mpom. Dr. Fonkoua also notes that the said procedure did not respect the principle of on-site investigation or attempts at amicable resolution of the dispute between two public servants.

In addition to the Order not being involved, the president of the organization is concerned about the “suspension of income of a doctor for such a long time at a time when Cameroonians are complaining about the high cost of living”. For all these reasons, and others, the president of the Order Council pleads for a “fairly rapid suspension” of this sanction.

Within the public opinion, there are criticisms of a disproportionate sanction.
