President Paul Biya recently made significant announcements through two decrees regarding the appointment of rectors for three prominent universities in Cameroon. These appointments, which were disclosed on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, signify a new phase of leadership in the academic realm for these institutions.

The newly appointed rectors are as follows:

– University of Bertoua: Prof. Pegbyemb Dieudonne Emmanuel
– University of Yaoundé I: Prof. Etoua Remy Magloire Dieudonne
– University of Yaoundé II: Prof. Omgba Richard Laurent

Professor Omgba Richard Laurent is widely respected within the academic community in Cameroon. Prior to assuming his role as rector of the University of Yaoundé II, he held prestigious positions such as Director of Higher Education Development in the Ministry of Higher Education and Permanent Secretary of the Consultative Commission of University Institutions, where he oversaw grade changes. His time as the dean of the Faculty of Arts, Letters, and Human Sciences at the University of Yaoundé I highlighted his passion for literature, as evidenced by his notable works like “Aimée Saisaire” and “Le Monde Noire,” which demonstrate his expertise in Anti-Colonial and Caribbean Literature.

Another notable academic figure is Professor Pegbyemb Dieudonne Emmanuel, who has been appointed as the rector of the University of Bertoua. With an extensive background, Professor Pegbyemb previously served as the Director of University Accreditation and Quality and General Coordinator of the Support Programme for Technological and Professional Components. Originating from the Sanaga Maritime Division of the Littoral region, he has devoted over 35 years to the university sector, specializing in organic chemistry.

Professor Etoua Remy Magloire Dieudonne, the newly appointed rector of the University of Yaoundé I, brings a combination of administrative expertise and academic proficiency to his position. Having previously served as the founding rector of the University of Bertoua since June 5, 2022, he also held the position of Director of the Advanced School of Engineering, commonly known as Polytechnic. Professor Etoua’s background in mathematics enriches his leadership in academia, especially as he returns to a campus where he once pursued his studies.

These presidential appointments mark a transition from the tenures of Professor Aurelien and Professor Adolfe, who have respectively led as rectors of the University of Yaoundé I and II for nearly 14 and 7 years. With Professor Aurelien’s retirement and Professor Adolfe’s new role as a member of the Constitutional Council, a new era unfolds for these esteemed universities under fresh leadership.
