Nigerian future military leaders challenged to propose innovative solutions at the launch of the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) course.
The Army War College Nigeria recently proudly welcomed 77 participants for the senior course in military strategy and management, marking the beginning of an intensive 35-week academic experience. Among the participants, 66 were from the Nigerian army, while the Nigerian air force and navy each had two representatives. Seven additional participants, hailing from allied countries such as Congo Brazzaville, CĂ´te d’Ivoire, Togo, Liberia, Eswatini, and two from Cameroon, enriched the diversity of this cohort.
With a robust educational program, the 8/2024 course promises to offer participants unique, solid, and stimulating courses. The inauguration of this new session was honored by the presence of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Lagbaja, who extended warm congratulations to the participants for their selection.
The COAS emphasized that the selection of participants was based on their individual skills, career prospects, and the recognition of their potential to successfully complete the course. He underscored the importance of this investment in military training, stating that “training is a crucial investment necessary for achieving operational success.”
General Lagbaja reiterated the initial objective of the establishment of the Army War College Nigeria in 2017, aiming to bridge the training gaps between tactical and strategic levels of war. He stated, “The training of the Nigerian army is crucial in achieving our constitutional objectives. My goal as a commander is to transform the Nigerian army into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force.”
Promising to prioritize the ongoing training of Nigerian army personnel, General Lagbaja expressed confidence in the institution’s ability to train competent officers and men. He also urged the participants of the 8/2024 course to demonstrate courage and ingenuity in seeking solutions to Nigeria’s multifaceted security challenges.
“You must understand that the Army War College Nigeria was created to deviate from the norm, dare to be different, but be logical and reasonable in its submission,” General Lagbaja declared. He challenged the participants to propose innovative and pragmatic options to address pressing issues such as the proliferation of self-defense groups and the quest for access to automatic weapons, as well as the role of the Nigerian army in addressing economic challenges.
In conclusion, General Lagbaja emphasized the importance of finding solutions that will not become tomorrow’s problems. “I look forward to receiving pragmatic, feasible strategies on how to manage the unintended consequences of burning issues… Your solutions must be such that they will not become tomorrow’s problem,” he stated, thus concluding his speech.
