An explosion of a gas cylinder occurred at a private hotel training facility in Ndogbong, Douala V Subdivision on Wednesday, February 7, injuring 18 students.
The explosion was caused by a fire that extended to a gas cylinder supplying the kitchen area of the establishment.
The blast resulted in varying degrees of burns to the students who were preparing for practical lessons. Response teams quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured victims to the resuscitation service of the General Hospital of Douala (HGD).
Hospital officials assessed the situation and admitted 18 students, 12 of whom were women and six were men, ranging in age from 16 to 30 years old.
The injuries ranged in severity, with nine cases classified as mild, four as moderate requiring hospitalization, and five cases of severe burns ranging from 25% to 60% of the entire body surface.
An HGD official stated that the level of emergency has been lifted and the hospital’s medical teams will conduct 24/7 surveillance to ensure the students receive the best care.
In addition to the burn injuries, one case of smoke inhalation remained a significant concern.
In response to the influx of victims, Douala General Hospital activated its massive influx management device known as “the white plan,” which mobilizes all necessary resources to ensure optimal care in the event of disasters.
The Governor of the Littoral Region, Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua, visited the hospital in response to the incident.
