Somalia has officially become a full member of the East African Community after depositing its ratification instrument of the treaty of accession. The official ceremony took place in the East African Community Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, where the community’s Secretary General, Dr. Peter Mathuki, expressed confidence that Somalia will integrate smoothly into the community.
Dr. Mathuki highlighted that Somalia is already an integral part of the East African region, with its people living alongside other East Africans. This existing integration will facilitate Somalia’s transition into the East African Community. Somalia’s accession follows that of the Democratic Republic of Congo in April 2022, marking a significant expansion of the bloc.
Despite Somalia’s application to join the community in 2012, security challenges within the country had previously impeded its accession. However, the recent depositing of the ratification instruments demonstrates Somalia’s commitment to harmonizing and ratifying the East African Community’s laws and treaties. This includes adherence to principles of good governance, democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and social justice.
A verification mission was conducted by the East African Community on January 25th of the previous year to assess Somalia’s readiness for accession. The verification team’s report was subsequently adopted by the EAC Heads of State Summit in Bujumbura on June 6th, 2023. Despite security concerns in Somalia, analysts anticipate a significant increase in transborder trade within the region. With a market of over 300 million people and a GDP exceeding $300 billion, the East African Community offers substantial economic opportunities.
The accession of Somalia to the East African Community marks a significant milestone in the region’s integration efforts. By joining the bloc, Somalia is poised to benefit from enhanced collaboration, trade opportunities, and regional cooperation. The community’s expansion to include Somalia underscores the commitment to fostering unity and economic prosperity within East Africa.
In conclusion, Somalia’s official membership in the East African Community signifies a new chapter in the country’s regional engagement. With a focus on shared values and objectives, Somalia’s integration into the community is expected to bring about positive developments for both the country and the broader East African region.
