The South Sudan East African Community (EAC) Affairs minister and Chairperson of the EAC Council of Ministers, Deng Alor Kuol, made an announcement last Thursday regarding an Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State. This summit, scheduled to be held virtually on April 15th, 2024, will focus on the appointment of the new EAC Secretary General.
In a statement released by the South Sudan EAC minister, it was revealed that on March 18th, 2024, a letter was received from the Republic of Kenya notifying the withdrawal of Hon. Dr. Peter Mutuku Mathuki as Secretary General of the East African Community. This news came amidst the recall of Dr. Peter Mathuki by the Kenyan President William Ruto earlier in the month, after serving as Secretary General for the past three years.
The recall was prompted by allegations of misappropriation and mismanagement of community funds by the Secretary General. The East African Legislative Assembly initiated an investigation into the matter, with an expected revelation of details surrounding the $6 million in question. Following his recall, the former EAC Secretary General was appointed as an ambassador to Moscow, Russia by the Kenyan president, pending approval by the National Parliament.
In the wake of these events, Kenya nominated Ms. Caroline Mwende Mueke as the new Secretary General of the East African Community. Her swearing-in is expected to take place during the upcoming EAC Heads of State Extra-Ordinary summit in mid-April this year. His Excellency Salva Kir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan and Chairperson of the EAC Summit, has called for an extra-ordinary Summit to be held virtually on April 15th, 2024, at 3:00 PM (EAT). Prior to the summit, the EAC Council of Ministers’ session will also be conducted virtually on the same day at 10 AM (EAT) to deliberate on the appointment of Ms. Caroline Mwende Mueke as the new Secretary General of the East African Community.
Overall, the upcoming Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State holds significant importance in addressing the leadership transition within the East African Community. The appointment of a new Secretary General marks a pivotal moment in the organization’s governance and future direction. Stay tuned for updates and outcomes from this important summit.
