The Burundi Ministry of the Interior, Community Development, and Public Security recently announced an extension to the deadline for registering foreign nationals living in the country. In a statement released on Thursday, March 28, 2024, the ministry informed all foreigners, including refugees, residing in Burundi that the census period has been extended until Saturday, March 30, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.

Registration activities are being conducted at the offices of all communes of Bujumbura City Hall and at the administration offices of all provinces across the country for all foreigners and urban refugees. The ministry emphasized the importance of all foreigners residing in Burundi to participate in the census and bring along the necessary documents that allow them to stay in the country. Refugees are required to present their refugee cards during the registration process.

This is not the first time a foreign census has been held in Burundi. In 2016, the government launched a census to register all foreigners in the country with a two-month deadline provided for registration. The majority of foreigners residing and working in Burundi come from various countries, including Asians, Congolese from the DRC, Malians, Rwandans, Senegalese, and Ugandans.

The initiative to register foreign nationals in Burundi aims to create an accurate database of foreigners living in the country, which will help enhance security and improve the management of foreign populations. By extending the deadline for registration, the government is providing an opportunity for all foreigners who have not yet been identified to come forward and participate in the census.

The Ministry of the Interior, Community Development, and Public Security reiterated its call for all foreigners to actively engage in the registration process to ensure that they are properly documented and recognized by the authorities. This initiative will not only benefit the government in terms of data collection but also provide essential services to foreign residents in the country.

As the census deadline approaches, it is crucial for all foreigners residing in Burundi to comply with the registration requirements and present the necessary documentation. By participating in the census, foreigners can help contribute to a more inclusive and organized society where everyone is accounted for and can access the services and support they need.

In conclusion, the extension of the foreign census deadline in Burundi underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the accurate registration of all foreigners residing in the country. By participating in the census, foreign nationals can help promote transparency, security, and effective governance in Burundi. It is essential for all foreigners to seize this opportunity and register before the deadline to avoid any potential issues in the future.
