Burkina Faso: Young people aspire to build a psychotrauma center

Ouagadougou, April 16, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The National Youth Council (CNJ) through the National Network of Youth for Innovation in Civil Engineering and Transportation presented, on Monday to the press, its project to build a psychotrauma center within the Sangoulé Lamizana camp for people affected by the security crisis.

According to the president of the National Network of Youth for Innovation in Civil Engineering, Gildas Bourgou, the National Youth Council (CNJ) wished for each youth entity in its field of expertise to propose a project that will contribute to peace efforts.

“We proposed in collaboration with the army psychologists a psycho traumatology center,” added Mr. Bourgou.

Gildas Bourgou spoke on Monday in Ouagadougou, following a press conference on the construction of a psychotrauma center within the Sangoulé Lamizana camp for people affected by the security crisis.

According to him, it will consist of a facility with the capacity to accommodate 25 patients, including two isolation rooms, a reception area, and three emergency rooms.

“We made sure the facility was spacious enough for an ambulance to enter inside to ensure the confidentiality of the patients who enter,” specified Gildas Bourgou.

He added that the army psychologists wanted to have a bungalow-style garden installed at the facility so that patients would not feel like they are in a prison.

“Until the foundation, we do not need financial support, we can even start tomorrow,” noted the president of the National Network of Youth for Innovation in Civil Engineering.

The president of the National Youth Council (CNJ), Moumouni Dialla, stated that the National Network of Youth for Innovation in Civil Engineering initiated this project for the psychological care of war wounded to respond to the call of the highest authorities.

“We want to call on the mobilization of youth in all its components and especially ask people of goodwill to support us so that we can establish this infrastructure,” urged Mr. Dialla.

According to him, there is a system at the CNJ that will allow people coming from other localities to contribute to be accommodated.

The CNJ president continued that through their mobilization system, cooking will be done on-site by young men and women.

“I think that even if someone cannot lift shovels or push wheelbarrows, they can cook. Everyone will have a role to play. We will provide substantial food like ‘benga’ and ‘souma,’ so when you eat, you only need to drink and you will have enough strength to push the wheelbarrows,” he declared.

For the Minister in charge of Youth, Dr. Boubakar Savadogo, this initiative represents the youth’s commitment to realize their crucial role in the country’s recovery and the construction of the social foundation of the nation.

According to the psychiatrist, Commander Aïcha Traoré, this psychotrauma center will allow destigmatization so that people can understand that psychotrauma is not necessarily a mental illness and enable people to come more easily for their care.

“The contribution of the General Staff in this project will consist, in the first instance, of making the space available on which the complex will be built, and secondly, ensuring that the complex is operational by equipping it with all the necessary medical and technical equipment and interior fittings,” informed Commander Traoré.

The construction work of this center, valued at 337 million CFA francs, will begin next May for a duration of 6 months.
