Burkina: Tengandogo University Hospital performs heart surgeries on seven patients

Ouagadougou, March 20, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – Tengandogo University Hospital performed its first heart surgeries in early March on seven patients suffering from annuloectasiante and left ventricular aneurysm, who were supposed to be evacuated abroad due to the complexity of the procedures.

Seven patients with two heart conditions, annuloectasiante and left ventricular aneurysm, underwent successful heart surgery at Tengandogo University Hospital in Ouagadougou in early March, as reported by the Burkinabe national television on Wednesday.

According to specialist Dr. Adama Sawadogo, these patients were supposed to be evacuated out of the country and even out of the region due to the complexity of this operation.

However, the Ministry of Health refused this evacuation and instead sought local expertise, confident in its quality.

Thus, the ministry decided to finance the intervention campaign for the two heart conditions.

“The authorities supported us by financing most of the campaign, including consumables such as medications. They brought in the missionaries by covering their transport costs,” said Dr. Adama Sawadogo.

“We have completed the transfer of competence to Dr. Sawadogo on valve surgery. Currently, he is very capable and absolutely able to perform a valve replacement surgery with very good results,” said specialist Dr. Marcos Zanobini.

For Dr. Sawadogo, a rapid heart transplant can now be envisioned in Burkina Faso.
