Burkina Faso: The National Human Rights Commission presents its missions to the populations of Balé
Boromo, March 20, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) organized a meeting on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 in Boromo to introduce the mandate of the CNDH and the missions of the Regional Office of Hauts Bassins to authorities and representatives of civil society organizations.
The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) is an independent national public authority for the promotion, protection, and defense of human rights in Burkina Faso. The institution has been in existence since 2001.
Unfortunately, according to the observation of the top officials, the CNDH is very little known among the population. The same goes for the delegation of the Regional Office of Hauts Bassins, which has been set up since 2021 and is unknown to the populations it is meant to serve.
In order to make themselves better known, the top officials initiated a tour from March 19 to 29, 2024 in the regions of Boucle du Mouhoun, Hauts Bassins, Cascades, and South-West to present both the mandate of the CNDH and the missions of the Regional Office of Hauts Bassins to the stakeholders in the regions covered by the office.
To achieve this, they held discussions with administrative authorities, defense and security forces, traditional and religious leaders, and representatives of civil society organizations in Boromo on March 19, 2024.
The participants listened to three presentations which focused on the mandate of the CNDH and the mission of the Regional Office of Hauts Bassins, the complaints mechanism of the CNDH, and the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture.
The presentations were given by the Secretary-General of the CNDH, Paul KABRE, the Chief of Complaints Service, Germaine KIEMA, and the Chief of the Western Regional Office, Olivier KABRE, respectively.
At the end of the presentations, the participants had fruitful discussions with the CNDH delegation.
The participants expressed their satisfaction with the approach of the CNDH, which allowed them to discover the institution.
According to the President of the Balé Provincial Youth Council, Zakaria GUIRA, human rights issues in the context of insecurity in Burkina should not be a taboo subject, and it is the role of the CNDH to be present among the population and listen to their concerns.
Secretary-General of the CNDH, Paul KABRE, stated that the mission achieved its objectives based on the mobilization of the invited stakeholders, the interest in the presentations, and the discussions.
Mr. KABRE also urged the participants to act as advocates within their respective structures to enable the population to become aware of the independent national public authority that is the CNDH and to access its services when necessary.
The High Commissioner of the province, Ibrahim Boly, expressed his satisfaction in hosting the CNDH, as it was their first mission to engage with the population, structures, and decentralized institutions of the province since its establishment. He also encouraged the participants to be conduits for the CNDH.
