Burkina Faso: The collective of ‘naive arts’ commits to “paint to resist”

Ouagadougou, March 23, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The collective of “naive arts” has committed to “paint to resist” through 27 works by 12 artists residing in Burkina Faso on the occasion of the launch of the 1st edition of the international biennial of naive arts, said its promoter, Maxime Sondo.

“For this 1st edition, 12 naive artists exhibited 27 works from the perspective of resistance, because there is a way to remain optimistic through art,” said the promoter of the naive arts collective, Maxime Sondo.

For him, naive works are distinguished by their bright colors, simplified and expressive forms that depict popular culture, scenes of daily life, the joy of living, portraits of animals, and historical events.

Sondo also specified that the objective of this 1st edition is to highlight this artistic genre that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, to value it, and to introduce it to a wider audience.

For his part, the exhibition curator, Dr. Arouna Yaméogo, suggested that “in the exhibition works, you will find the dimension of calling to return to our cultural roots to find the strength to reinvent our daily lives, to find ways to resist and fight against terrorism through resilience.”

He explained that this artistic style is often associated with self-taught artists or artists without formal academic training. Therefore, during this biennial, several discussions will be on the program for a better understanding of naive arts.

With his two works, exhibitor Seïdou Nassarmadje focused on the issue of education because in the current situation in Burkina Faso, “education is the most important in instilling our values and the culture of peace and cohesion.”

For the painter, Souleymane Sawadogo, “despite the situation that the enemy is making us endure, I remind through my works the respect for tradition.”

Visiting for the exhibition, the Nikièma brothers are amazed by the beauty and originality of the different works and call on the population to come and visit.

It is worth mentioning that the 1st edition of the international biennale of naive arts will take place from March 23 to 29, 2024, at the Maareere workshops located in the Tanghin district of Ouagadougou.
