Burkina/ Temperature Rise: Government Aims to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality
Ouagadougou, April 6th, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Ministry of Health has taken action to reduce the morbidity and mortality that could result from the recent high temperatures, the Africa Links 24 learned on Saturday.
“Considering the consequences that heatwaves could have, health authorities concerned with the health and well-being of the population have deemed it necessary to mobilize in order to inform the population of the necessary actions to take and to be prepared for any eventuality,” a document from the Health Ministry published on its Facebook page stated.
According to the Secretary General of the Ministry, Dr. Issa Ouédraogo, controlling the situation in different health facilities requires anticipation, accurate diagnosis, and rapid case management in order to reduce morbidity and mortality.
Dr. Ouédraogo emphasized the urgent need to assess the situation in healthcare centers in response to the significant rise in temperatures.
“Considering the situation, stakeholders have been immediately instructed to work diligently to make data available for analysis that will effectively manage the cases,” he stated.
The Ministry’s Secretary General specified that the current conditions for patient care, the work of healthcare personnel, and case management strategies during this period of high temperatures were among the topics discussed in recent meetings with colleagues.
While awaiting detailed information on the situation, the Health Ministry urged the population to take precautions, such as drinking water regularly, looking after the elderly, and seeking medical attention at the nearest healthcare center when experiencing any symptoms.
A visit was promptly conducted to the emergency medical services at the Yalgado Ouédraogo University Hospital (CHU-YO) to assess the working conditions of the staff and the current state of the patients.
