Burkina Faso: Prime Minister calls for reporting “unfounded and unjustified expenses” in the army to the Prosecutor

Ouagadougou, March 12, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – Prime Minister Dr. Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélèm de Tambèla invited the ASCE-LC on Monday to report “unfounded and unjustified expenses in the army” to the Prosecutor so that those implicated can explain themselves.

Prime Minister Dr. Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélèm de Tambèla received the 2022 general activity report from the Higher Authority for State Control and the Fight against Corruption (ASCE-LC) in Ouagadougou on Monday.

The Acting State Controller, Urbain Millogo, stated that his institution audited the Ministry of Defense and Veterans from 2016 to 2021 and noted “irregularities.”

“We audited the army budget since 2016 and found that for the purchase of weapons, the State worked with a trafficker. Contracts for the purchase of weapons were also awarded to several companies owned by the same individual,” he said.

He also informed the prime minister that “for fuel management, there is no material accountant, so we need to work on correcting that. Everything must be traceable in terms of fuel management,” he added.

According to the Head of Government, if there are unfounded and unjustified expenses in the army, the ASCE-LC should report them to the Prosecutor so that the individuals involved can explain themselves.

“Those who awarded the arms contract to a trafficker must be held accountable because we cannot give a contract to someone who is not qualified to execute it. The President of the Transition wants the truth to come out. We are not satisfied with how the army has been managed,” he emphasized.
