Burkina: President Traoré signs a decree to reward whistleblowers of proven corruption cases

Ouagadougou, March 15, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, signed a decree yesterday to facilitate the reporting of corruption in the public administration and reward the whistleblowers if proven, the Africa Links 24 learned today.

Announced on February 21, 2024, during a cabinet meeting, the decree to facilitate the reporting of corruption and related offenses as well as the malpractices in the administration was signed on March 14, 2024, by President Ibrahim Traoré.

According to the text, reports of corruption and related offenses must be made in good faith to the authorized structures, with copies to be deposited at the President’s office by any means.

Reporting malpractices should be done to the hierarchical superior of the erring public official, as stated in the decree.

“Malpractices refer to any breach of professional obligations, any violation of ethical rules committed by a public official during, in connection with, or in the exercise of their duties. The report must be made in writing and should indicate the facts, any possible witnesses, dates, places, and any other relevant information,” the decree explains.

If the allegations are proven, the whistleblower will receive a reward but may be prosecuted in case of false or abusive denunciation.

At the beginning of the year, President Ibrahim Traoré promised an unwavering fight against corruption.

On several occasions, he has urged public officials to perform their tasks diligently and respect the users.
