(Ouagadougou, April 8, 2024). The Transitional President, Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore, handed over a significant batch of aerial vectors to the Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs on Monday as part of the reclamation of territory and the fight against terrorism.

By officially handing over the dozen combat drones acquired through various contributions from Burkinabè citizens, Captain Ibrahim Traore expressed his satisfaction in providing “a number of devices, mainly consisting of Bayraktar TB2 and Bayraktar Akinci, to the defense forces.” According to the Head of State, “all tests have been successful; it is therefore a pride to confirm that these devices are joining the fleet of the Burkinabè army.”

The Commander-in-Chief reassured the performance of these devices. “TB2 needs no introduction. It has proven itself since the beginning of this war, and I think the novelty is Akinci, which has exceeded the technical capabilities the manufacturer had planned. It has been subjected to stringent tests in terms of payload capacity, endurance, ceiling, speed, performance, etc. During the test, it participated in combat missions. These are very efficient, reliable devices that we currently have,” Captain Traore stated.

These drones were developed by a Turkish company. On this occasion, the Transitional President thanked his Turkish counterpart for the support provided to Burkina Faso during this crucial phase of its history. “Today, we can say that cooperation with Turkey is going very well. And this is an opportunity to thank His Excellency Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey, who has led this cooperation as it should be. This is the kind of partnership we need; healthy and sincere,” stated the Head of State.

He also thanked the Burkinabè people who understood the essence of the fight and engaged through various contributions that enable the armed forces to increase their operational capacity for the defense of the territory. “Everything you see is thanks to the people that we can acquire these devices that will enhance our operational capacity. The expansion of the fleet allows for timely intervention and constant surveillance,” rejoiced the Head of State.

The Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Brigadier General Kassoum Coulibaly, assured the Transitional President of the proper use of the equipment received. “We have a multitude of these devices currently in the sky, scanning, searching, and identifying enemies to be defeated, thanks to the contributions of the population,” explained General Coulibaly.

He praised the efforts of contracted individuals, mainly Burkinabè students, who are working diligently for the success of the operations. “We are confident in what they do. They are committed and qualified,” he added.

Brigadier General Kassoum Coulibaly recalled that the acquisition of this equipment is part of the implementation of the strategic plan to equip the national armed forces. “There is still a final phase of what was planned in this initial equipment plan,” he added.
