Burkina Faso: President Traoré Plans to Create a “Rehabilitation Center” for Unscrupulous Entrepreneurs

Tenkodogo, March 8, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Transition President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, stated on Friday his intention to establish a center to “rehabilitate” entrepreneurs who do not fulfill their commitments, especially those who undermine public contracts related to food sovereignty.

Burkina Faso’s head of state, Ibrahim Traoré, hinted on Friday, March 8, 2024, in Tenkodogo, that it is necessary to re-educate certain entrepreneurs who have been awarded public contracts but fail to honor their commitments.

“We have been greatly disappointed by the entrepreneurs who have taken on projects, accepted the advance payments, and then refuse to work. Recently, we had to apprehend someone to re-educate them. It is inconceivable that land is requisitioned from farmers to allow them to produce, and by March, the entrepreneur has not even reached 10% of the execution despite receiving over 5 billion CFA francs,” explained President Traoré during a meeting with the stakeholders from the Center-East region, on the occasion of March 8.

Recall that on February 19, 2024, Agriculture Minister, Commander Ismaël Sombié, visiting Sindou, expressed his frustration with a company that was lagging behind in the development of the lowlands in Sindou.

“Additional deadlines have been given to the (lagging) companies. Anyone who, after this deadline, cannot achieve the level of completion we desire, we will be forced to terminate the work. But not only that; these types of companies will need to be re-educated. We will create a center for that,” insisted the head of state.

He emphasized the need to depart from certain laws. “People know the laws and feel entitled to do as they please. They always have lawyers to defend them. But we have a different way of re-educating people, and we will apply it.”

According to him, entrepreneurs do as they please. “If you haven’t taken the money, we can understand. But when an entrepreneur has a 15 billion market and has already taken 5 billion, and we find that nothing has been done, it is pure sabotage.”

The Transition President criticized the attitude of some local accomplices who have no interest in Burkina Faso achieving food self-sufficiency.

“Here, we are warning these entrepreneurs to urgently start working day and night to achieve our goal, otherwise, after a certain period, they will be re-educated in our way,” he stressed.

The President of the Transition made these statements after observing the behavior of some entrepreneurs in the context of the agro-sylvo pastorale and halieutic offensive, overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Indeed, he mentioned that some companies entrusted with land development projects have “sabotaged” the tasks assigned to them.
