Burkina: ALT Donates Extracorporeal Circulation Machine to Tengandogo University Hospital for Cardiac Operations

Ouagadougou, March 29, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Transitional National Assembly (ALT) on Thursday donated an extracorporeal circulation machine to the Tengandogo University Hospital (CHU-T) to contribute to the improvement of the technical platform for cardiac operations in Burkina Faso.

“This donation aims to contribute to the improvement of the technical platform for cardiac operations in Burkina Faso,” according to the Ministry of Health’s communication services.

For Dr. Adama Sawadogo, a cardiovascular surgeon at the Tengandogo University Hospital (CHU-T), this is a state-of-the-art device that will allow the hospital to go beyond routine operations and perform more complex operations, possibly leading to heart transplantation in the future.

Thanks to this extracorporeal circulation machine, the Tengandogo University Hospital has been able to successfully perform open-heart surgeries on 40 people since late October, he noted.

According to the President of the Transitional National Assembly (ALT), Dr. Ousmane Bougouma, with this machine, Burkina Faso becomes the second country in the sub-region to have a technical platform capable of performing open-heart surgery.

Dr. Bougouma also emphasized that this equipment will help avoid certain medical evacuations, saving the government money.

The Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Dr. Robert Kargougou, expressed his gratitude to the President of the Legislative Assembly of Transition for the equipment handed over to CHU-T.
