Burkina: Hugues Fabrice Zango sponsors the sports walk of the French Embassy
Ouagadougou, March 14, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – World triple jump champion Hugues Fabrice Zango sponsored a sports walk and self-defense event organized by the French Embassy in Burkina Faso on Thursday at the Bangr-Wéogo Park in Ouagadougou, to celebrate the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which are set to begin on July 26.
In just over 100 days, the 2024 Olympic Games will open in Paris on July 26, followed by the Paralympic Games on August 28. In order to celebrate the event and promote sport in general, the French Embassy in Burkina Faso organized a sports walk followed by self-defense activities at the Urban Park Bangr Weogo in Ouagadougou.
“This is the 3rd edition of the Paris 2024 world relay race with the NGO Terre de Jeux based in France. The goal is for all French diplomatic posts around the world today, during their time slot, wherever they are in the world, to organize a sports event from 9am to 10am so that for 24 hours non-stop, there is sports activity everywhere in the world and we pass on the famous Terre de Jeux relay between embassies with all the sports partners we can have in the different countries where we will be,” explained the cooperation attaché at the French Embassy, Clément Brousse.
This friendly and non-competitive event is under the patronage of Hugues Fabrice Zango, Olympic medalist and current world triple jump champion, and Philippe Duporge, the Chargé d’affaires of the French Embassy.
The world triple jump champion, who walked the paths of Bangr-Wéogo Park, expressed that “when we talk about sports, it speaks to me directly. When we talk about the Olympic games in particular. This year we are in an Olympic year that is particularly close to my heart with a big objective I have in the next 4 months. When the French Embassy asked me to sponsor this relay event, I immediately said yes because it spoke to me directly.”
Fabrice Zango has expressed being “delighted to see a good turnout with people who have returned to sports and hopefully will continue to stay engaged. As long as it is possible to support sports activities, I am present.”
“This activity allows me to inspire more people to engage in sports because I have a dual motivation, to perform and to be able to pass it on as well. I have seen some young people who were happy to see me because it’s nice to see me on TV but it’s even better to see me in person here. It helps them persevere in sports activities,” said Hugues Zango.
Excited for the conquest of the Olympic gold medal next summer in Paris, Hugues Zango said, “The country supports me, so I have a duty of accountability to this nation that has supported me a lot.”
The cooperation attaché at the French Embassy, Clément Brousse, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the event. “We are very pleased with this event that we organized thanks to our partners and the mobilization of the entire network of the French embassy. We had around sixty participants, and we are very happy that everyone had a good time.”
The sports walk concluded with a brief self-defense session with Gloria Guissou Kabré, (3rd dan black belt) General Director of Ringo Sport, and a light snack.
