Burkina: Government considers the possibility of opening a public veterinary school
Ouagadougou, March 14, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Burkinabe government recently convened a committee in Koudougou, in the Central-West region, to conduct a study on the feasibility of opening a public veterinary school in Burkina Faso in order to train veterinarians locally, the livestock ministry reported.
This meeting brought together stakeholders in animal health, researchers, and legal experts, all of whom are members of the committee tasked with assessing the feasibility of opening a public veterinary school in Burkina Faso, according to the communication department of the livestock ministry.
According to the same source, these experts are tasked with producing a comprehensive dossier that includes an in-depth evaluation of the project’s feasibility, an analysis of training, infrastructure, material, and human resource needs. The committee is also expected to draft the necessary legal and administrative documents for the school’s establishment, identify potential partners for support, and prepare for the national workshop to validate the study.
According to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Resources, and Fisheries, Mr. Gaoussou Sanou, the creation of a public veterinary school in Burkina Faso will help meet the need for veterinarians.
Up to now, Burkinabe veterinarians have been trained abroad with the support of the state and its partners.
Mr. Sanou stated, “Establishing a veterinary school is a priority for meeting the needs of veterinarians in Burkina Faso. In 2021, there were 121 veterinary doctors for the entire population, including 9.5 million livestock, 21.5 million poultry, 33 million small ruminants, and 1.3 million pigs.”
He commended the commitment of the resource persons and urged all participants to rigorously examine the implementation possibilities of the project.
This initiative is supported by the Regional Project for Pastoralism Support in the Sahel Phase 2 (PRAPS 2), with its first component focusing on improving animal health and veterinary drug control.
