Burkina: Free Vouchers to Improve Retirees’ Health
Ouagadougou, March 28, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – CARFO and CNSS will provide retirees and spouses of retirees with vouchers for consultations, examinations, and medications to enable them to have their annual medical check-ups at a time and place of their convenience.
The president of the organizing committee for the 10th edition of the free medical check-up for retirees and spouses of retirees, Hamidou Sawadogo, announced to the press on Thursday that this edition, scheduled for April to June 2024, will feature a new format tailored to the needs of the beneficiaries. “This new format will provide beneficiaries with service vouchers,” he explained.
“The vouchers will mainly cover the costs of physical examinations, laboratory tests, and pharmacy expenses,” said committee president Hamidou Sawadogo.
He continued that beneficiaries will be able to have their medical check-ups at their convenience during the period indicated on the voucher and at all accredited healthcare facilities as well as at all pharmacies affiliated with the Economic Interest Group of Pharmacists in Burkina Faso (GIEPHAB).
The director of social protection, Oumarou Sawadogo, explained that each voucher has three sections: one for a consultation worth 2250 CFA for men and 3750 CFA for women, including cervical cancer screening; the second for laboratory tests worth 7000 CFA, and the third for medication purchases worth 5000 CFA.
“It is not a full coverage but a contribution to help pensioners take care of themselves and improve their health status,” emphasized organizing committee president Oumarou Sawadogo. He added that the medication purchase section of the voucher will allow doctors to prescribe based on the beneficiary’s needs.
Mr. Sawadogo also mentioned that the national committee has decided to pilot a system where vouchers can be used annually in Ouagadougou and Fada, allowing their use for up to 6 months instead of the usual 2 months in the rest of the country.
Furthermore, he noted that this edition will see an expansion of access points for services. “The designated sites for the check-ups are primarily regional university hospitals, regional hospitals, medical centers with surgical units, and OST and CST services, as well as urban medical centers in the regional committees of Ouagadougou and Fada N’Gourma,” stated the organizing committee president.
He also announced that this year, the check-up will commence simultaneously at the various sites in each regional committee from the launch date of Thursday, April 4, 2024, at the Tenkodogo Regional Hospital.
“We have made the vouchers available to CNSS and CARFO so that retirees can present the necessary documents to access the services,” he confirmed.
As a reminder, the overall goal of the annual medical check-up is to contribute to improving the health status of retirees and surviving spouses of retirees from the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) and the Autonomous Fund for Civil Servants Retirement (CARFO).
