Burkina Faso to Participate in International Conference on Nuclear Security
On April 5, 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, announced during the regular session of the Council of Ministers that Burkina Faso would participate in the international conference on nuclear security.
“The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabe Abroad briefed the Council on Burkina Faso’s participation in the International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS), scheduled from May 20 to 24, 2024, in Vienna, Austria,” reported the public newspaper Sidwaya.
According to Elena Buglov, Director of the Division of Nuclear Security at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as published on the IAEA website, ICONS 2024 aims to provide national authorities, regional networks, international organizations, and companies a platform to exchange on what has already been done, but more importantly, on what will be done in the future.
“This conference will bring together ministers, senior officials, personnel from agencies developing nuclear security policies and management, and technical and legal experts working in all areas of nuclear security,” she added.
ICONS 2024 will consist of two parts: a ministerial debate leading to the adoption of a ministerial declaration from May 20 to 21, 2024, and a scientific and technical program from May 22 to 24, 2024.
As the fourth of its kind, this international ministerial-level conference on nuclear security will build upon previous international conferences on nuclear security held in 2013, 2016, and 2020.
