Burkina: The Prime Minister wants to capitalize on the lessons and experiences of the Sankarist Revolution

Ouagadougou, April 3, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Prime Minister organized a public conference on Wednesday, aiming to draw lessons from the Sankarist Revolution (1983-1987), particularly the organization and involvement of the people in major development projects, as observed by the Africa Links 24.

The Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister, Ferdinand Ouédraogo, presided over the opening ceremony of the public conference on the National Days of Patriotic Engagement and Citizen Participation on behalf of the head of government Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambéla, on Wednesday morning in Ouagadougou. The National Days were launched on March 25 by the Transition President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

According to him, the public conference aims “to learn from what happened during the Revolution, to benefit from these lessons to move forward.”
Ouédraogo emphasized that the conference will feature “open debates to raise questions and concerns with the goal of capitalizing on everything that happened during the revolution and even before, reflecting patriotic commitments.”

“Patriotic engagement is citizen engagement. Any responsible action that helps society progress, create balance, establish peace, security, and leads Burkina Faso to be more prosperous and have a better quality of life, are patriotic commitments,” he explained.

After the opening ceremony, presentations and contributions were made on the revolutionary period of President Thomas Sankara from 1983 to 1987.

Special adviser to the Prime Minister Luc Damiba presented his communication on the theme “Assessment of experiences of patriotic engagement in the history of Burkina Faso.”

In his communication, Mr. Damiba listed patriotic engagements before and during colonization and under the 1983 revolution.
Before colonization, populations had social and community engagement methods such as working together in agriculture and building homes, among others.

Under colonization, the Voltaique populations were forced to do labor, paid capitation tax, and worked on major projects like dams, schools, and roads under duress, explained panelist Damiba.

According to Luc Damiba, the revolutionary experience of 1983 liberated the Voltaique and Burkinabe man and woman, organized the people, and promoted hard work.

The national days of patriotic engagement and citizen participation were established on November 22, 2023, by the Council of Ministers. They are scheduled to be held on March 26 and October 2 of each year for fifteen days.

During the launch of these days on Monday, March 25, on national television, President Ibrahim Traoré stated that the Government instituted these Days to strengthen the foundations of the Burkinabè Nation and enhance social cohesion and living together.

The choice of the first date refers to the political commitment of the national hero, President Thomas Sankara, who delivered one of his historic speeches, “Who are the enemies of the people?”, on March 26, 1983, when he was Prime Minister.

The second date for the national days of patriotic engagement and citizen participation is October 2, the same day in 1983 when President Thomas Sankara delivered the Political Orientation Speech (DOP) of the democratic and popular revolution.
