The article discusses Burkina Faso’s efforts to create a national strategy for managing its diaspora in order to strengthen their involvement in the country’s defense and progress. The country is currently facing challenges related to its integrity, sovereignty, and development, and the government sees the diaspora as playing a crucial role in addressing these issues.

Experts and stakeholders gathered in Ziniaré from February 11 to 14 to review and validate a document outlining the national strategy for managing the Burkinabe diaspora. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabe Abroad organized a workshop in Ziniaré from March 11 to 14, 2024, to validate this strategy.

During the opening ceremony of the validation workshop, Ambassador Issa Boro, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabe Abroad, recognized the significant contribution of the diaspora to the socio-economic development of the country and the restoration of national sovereignty. He emphasized that the validated document would provide the government with a reference point for coordinating and aligning the various initiatives related to the Burkinabe diaspora.

The strategy highlights four key strategic areas for intervention. These include strategic coordination and strengthening institutional capacities for the effective management of the diaspora, fostering a sense of belonging among Burkinabe living abroad, increasing the contribution of the diaspora to the country’s socio-economic development, and promoting African integration and favorable international relations conducive to development.

The Secretary-General also mentioned that the implementation of the national strategy would aim to have a motivated, dynamic, united, and engaged diaspora by 2028, significantly impacting the country’s progress and international reputation. Mr. Mandèma Jean-Baptiste Sankara, the Director of Economic Promotion and Diaspora Investments, explained that in the current context, this strategy would help maximize the potential of the Burkinabe diaspora.

Given the cross-cutting nature of diaspora management, various government ministries and institutions participated in the workshop. The government hopes that through the implementation of this strategy, Burkina Faso will harness the full potential of its diaspora community and leverage their unique characteristics for national development.

This initiative reflects Burkina Faso’s recognition of the valuable contributions that the diaspora can make to the country’s growth and prosperity. By actively involving the diaspora in its development processes, Burkina Faso aims to strengthen its ties with its citizens abroad and promote greater collaboration for the benefit of all stakeholders involved.
