Burkina: Associations Seek Solutions to Antimicrobial Resistance
Ouagadougou, March 12, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Burkinabe Association for the Fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (RAM-Burkina), in collaboration with the Youth Action Against Antimicrobial Resistance (AJRAM), organized a symposium on Tuesday to reflect on solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance.
According to the representative of the Minister of Health, the Minister Delegate in charge of animal resources, Amadou Dicko, this symposium will help identify perspectives that will effectively combat Antimicrobial Resistance (RAM).
“The multisectoral action plan adopted in 2017 and currently being revised for the period 2024-2026 aims to strengthen surveillance on AMR, reduce the incidence of infections through effective prevention measures,” said Mr. Dicko.
According to him, this action plan also aims to improve the use of antimicrobial drugs in human health, animal health, and agriculture.
The Minister Delegate in charge of animal resources also noted that the plan aims to strengthen the regulatory framework for combating AMR.
In his opinion, this first edition, under the theme “Combating antimicrobial resistance in Burkina Faso: assessment, challenges, and perspectives in the context of new epidemics and security challenges,” fits perfectly with the objectives of the plan.
According to the chair of the scientific committee, Prof. Rasmata Ouédraogo, alarming data on the level of resistance of certain germs and the limited development of new antibiotics have raised awareness within the international community.
Prof. Ouédraogo stated that urgent action is needed to contain this resistance, which poses a real threat to humanity as a whole.
“This symposium is an opportunity for exchanges allowing the national community to capitalize on the achievements of the implementation of the AMR combat plan in Burkina Faso, identify shortcomings, and especially prioritize actions to be taken in the coming years,” she specified.
Prof. Rasmata Ouédraogo explained that by involving young people in the current approach to this fight, stakeholders want to empower them to anticipate.
She mentioned that more than 300 participants are expected at this conference, which is taking place from March 12 to 13, 2024 at the University of Joseph Ki-Zerbo.
The president of the organizing committee, Prof. Abdoul Salam Ouédraogo, clarified that the 48-hour meeting will bring together teachers, students from various backgrounds, and decision-makers from various ministries.
For the USAID representative, a partner of the Ministry of Health, Alyson McFarland, AMR jeopardizes the health of populations and compromises their safety.
Ms. McFarland also urged participants to better embrace the symposium to effectively combat AMR in Burkina Faso.
